Kumrat Valley is a forested Upper Dir destination known for camping, cedar slopes, and a quieter feel than Kalam’s bazaar strip. It rewards multi-day trips with a jeep and flexible lodging plans.

Must-Visit Places in Kumrat Valley
The places most travelers should prioritize here: viewpoints, lakes, forts, and trailheads that define a first visit. 6 with a full Sublime Northern guide.

Kalam Valley
I'd call Kalam upper Swat's green room: river noise, pine shade, and jeep days toward Mahodand and Ushu. You'll find it softer and more forested than the high Karakoram valleys, which is exactly why I like it.
- Open
Jarogo Waterfall
I'd treat Jarogo as the Madyan-Kalam roadside pause that justifies slowing down. You'll get a short cascade stop, wet stone, and just enough drama without turning the day into an expedition.

Charrat Waterfall
Charrat Waterfall is a local cascade stop in the Swat / Malam Jabba area, best treated as a short half-day add-on to a Swat itinerary. Exact pin and access spur need field confirmation before publishing turn-by-turn directions.
- Open
Kundol Lake
Kundol Lake is a high Swat alpine lake above Kalam / Ushu approaches - jeep and trek territory, not a bazaar day-trip.
- Open
Mahodand Lake
Mahodand Lake is a high alpine lake above Kalam in Swat’s Ushu Valley, reached by seasonal jeep from the town. It feels quieter than Naran’s headline lakes and suits travelers already staging in Kalam for a full-day outing.
- Open
Malam Jabba
Malam Jabba is Swat’s hill resort ridge - chairlifts and snow play in season, with forest views above the main valley road.

The story
Kumrat sits off the main Swat motorway circuit, reached through Dir country rather than Mingora alone. Travelers come for riverside camps, tall conifers, and meadow day walks rather than fort towns or lake resorts. Facilities are basic - think tents, simple guesthouses, and self-sufficiency. Pairing with Kalam is popular on paper but the road logic is different; treat Kumrat as its own overnight commitment and confirm monsoon road status before you leave Thal / Dir.

Luggage
What to pack
Here's what I'd actually put in the bag for Kumrat Valley - not a catalog fantasy, just the kit that stops the trip from becoming a negotiation with the weather.
Essential
- Soft duffel or roller + daypack40-50L soft bag + 20-30L daypack
Soft bags survive jeep roofs better than hard shells. Keep the daypack for hikes and last-mile walks.
- Layered clothingBase + mid + shell
Mornings can bite even when afternoons feel gentle. I'd rather peel layers than freeze on a viewpoint.
- Rain / wind shell1
Mountain weather invents hobbies. A light shell earns its keep.
- Cash (PKR)3-5 days float
ATMs are uneven. I'd rather carry a boring wad than negotiate with a machine that has opinions.
- Sun protectionHat + SPF + sunglasses
Altitude sun is cheerful and unkind.
- Basic first-aid + personal medsSmall kit
Blister care, pain relief, any prescriptions you actually need.
- Trail shoes or broken-in boots1 pair + sandals for evenings
New boots on day one is how legends (and blisters) are born.
Nice to have
- Power bank1
Outages and long jeep days love dead phones.
- Reusable water bottle1L+
Refill where water is trusted; carry more on jeep lake days.
Money
Rough costs
Per person / day
PKR 5,000-14,000
Stay + simple meals + local hops
Rough ballpark per person for stay, simple meals, and local hops - not a private jeep every day. Jeep lake / glacier days spike costs; peak Jul-Aug leans high. Confirm fares locally; my numbers go stale faster than apricot jam.
