The story
Shigar opens north of Skardu as a greener ribbon of fields and villages against high rock walls. Many visitors come for the restored fort/palace atmosphere, riverside walks, and a slower pace than Skardu town. It also sits on the way toward destinations that feel more expeditionary. Road access from Skardu is short once you are in Baltistan; the hard part is getting to Skardu itself - flight when weather allows, or a long mountain drive.
