Skardu sits where the Indus corridor opens into a wide Baltistan basin, and I'd use it as a logistics hub rather than a single postcard stop. You'll sleep in town, then fan out to Katpana's dunes, Shangrila and Upper Kachura, Satpara, Shigar Fort, and farther day-trips like Manthoka. Services are denser here than in the side valleys, which is comforting until a flight cancels and you remember altitude and dry air still run the show. I'd build buffer days and stock cash before committing to Deosai or Khaplu.

Expect hearty Balti meals, apricot products in season, and town restaurants that range from honest to optimistic. I'd eat simply before jeep days.

Book vs walk-in I'd book peak summer weekends ahead, especially if I wanted a lake-adjacent room. Shoulder months, walk-in usually works in town.
I'd sleep in Skardu city for ATMs, jeep stands, and food variety, then day-trip outward. Lake resorts cost more and fill faster in July and August. Stock snacks and fuel plans before Deosai or Khaplu; town is the last place that feels fully stocked.
Connectivity Town data is usually workable; lakes and Deosai approaches drop offline fast. I'd download maps in Skardu and assume jeep days are radio silence with scenery.
